Operating force
This is a measurement conducted to assess the operational quality of rotary volume switches equipped on electronic pianos and audio devices. If the volume switch cannot be smoothly rotated, users may feel discomfort and it can contribute to a cheap impression, making the operational quality of such switches important from a branding perspective.
As a measurement method, a device called a torque gauge is used to measure the rotational force (torque) required to turn the switch, and the maximum torque value necessary for rotating the switch is measured. As the maximum torque value increases, the switch feels heavier to rotate, and as it decreases, it becomes lighter. Additionally, using optional software (separately sold) allows for graph plotting, and any resistance or irregularities during rotation will be reflected in the waveform of the graph. This enables checking for any discomfort that users might perceive. In the video provided here, we conducted measurements on individual volume switches, but there are also torque gauges available for measuring volume switches installed on completed instruments such as electronic pianos.
